What do you see? Of course it is Nelson Mandela but what do you see? The Ethos or ethic, credibility and honor of this man is evident in his life, to be certain, but it is also evident in him as an individual - as a man created in the image of his God. Not just his ethos, but his pathos or capacity to feel pain and suffering and the suffering of others. The capacity and willingness to participate in the community of suffering that is humanity. Then finally there is the Logos, the word, the reason or logic of this great scholar and humanitarian.
Why is Nelson Mandela on this page? Because in the search for an image that captured Ethos, Pathos, Logos and Kairos it became evident that while they can be understood as words, discussed as philosophies - even represented in images, they can only be embodied in a human being. Immediately it made sense that if the world is to perceive and experience them, we must all stretch ourselves to whatever extent possible within our feeble frames to become our best selves, embodying Ethos, Pathos, Logos and Kairos.
Nelson Mandela embodied all of these and much more. The heart of a lion beat in his chest and he fought to become and remain all that he could be at his very best. Kairos, of course, speaks to the timing and the opportune moment to act. Many felt that the time it takes to change a culture, a country or the world is unreasonably long or impossible altogether but Kairos presupposes that there are windows of opportunity that must be grasped and not let go until the promised blessing frees itself from the clasped hand and clenched fist of its oppressor.
Nelson Mandela knew that his time would come and so he maintained his Ethos, experienced Pathos, developed his Logos while he waited patiently for his Kairos.
Mike Neil Ministries is founded on these principles. They run through everything we do and provide the impetus and focus for the work we desire to see expressed in everyone whose lives we are gifted to touch.
What do you see? Look closely at every feature of this man. Commit what your eyes see to memory and stretch yourself with us as we strive forward and upward and outward to become our own models of a life fully purposed and wonderfully fulfilled.
